6-Day Mt Kenya Climbing and Samburu Safari

This tour takes you to the second highest mountain in Africa - Mount Kenya and Samburu National Park. You enjoy the scenic view from Mount Kenya while having the change to spot the versatile wildlife of the park, such as elephants, leopard, bush and water bucks and over 130 bird species. Afterwards you can relax in Samburu were big cats and herds of elephants roam the plains. In the rivers hippos and crocodiles are in plenty.


Itinerary

Day 1: Nairobi - Mount Kenya

You picked on arrival at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi or your hotel in Nairobi by our experienced driver/ guide. After a short briefing you will start your safari towards Mount Kenya (about 3 hours drive). You will check in for lunch at Naro Moru River Lodge at the foothills of Mount Kenya. Here you can relax and acclimatize for your climbing Mt. Kenya which will start the following day.

Lunch, dinner and overnight at Naro Moru River Lodge.

Day 2: Mount Kenya

After enjoying a good breakfast at Naru Moro River lodge you will start the hike up Mount Kenya using the Naro Moru Route which approaches the mountain from the west and is the quickest approach to the summit. From the lodge you will be driven to the Naru Moru Gate of Mount Kenya National Park where you will start the trek. The guide sets a leisure pace for the relaxing trek up on the mountain to help you acclimatize and enjoy the fascinating vegetation with its rich animal and bird life. Packed lunch is provided en-route. After about three hours you arrive at Met Station to spend the night in the log cabins at an altitude of 3,050 meters.

Day 3: Mount Kenya

After breakfast you hike past the forest line to moorland zone covered by tussock grass, past the heater's zone, into the Teleki Valley and onto the highest crest of the ridge. This vantage point gives you an excellent view of the mains Mount Kenya peaks. Packed lunch in provided en-route. You will walk about 4-6 hours on this day and spent the night at makindas at 4,200 meters.

Day 4: Mount Kenya

A pre-dawn start ensures a successful summit bid in time for a clear view of the breathtaking scenery after sunrise. With the help of the guide you ascend for about 4-5 hours to Point Lenana at 4,985 meters, before descending to Shipton Camp for breakfast. From there you descent further down to Old Moses Camp for overnight.

Day 5: Mount Kenya - Samburu

After breakfast you continue descending to Sirimon gate of Mount Kenya National Park where you will be awaited by your driver. He will take you along the northern side of Mount Kenya with a stopover for lunch in a restaurant in Isiolo town. After lunch you will take on the last short bid to Samburu National Park. You will check-in at Samburu Game Lodge before going on an evening game drive until dinner.

Day 6: Samburu - Nairobi

You will begin your last safari day with an early morning game drive from 06.30 to 08.30 hours. This pre-breakfast game drive gives you good chances to see Big Cats hunting or sharing a kill. Some of the elusive animals like the leopard may be seen at this hour. You return to the lodge for breakfast and leave thereafter for Nairobi with lunch in a designated restaurant on the way. You will be arriving back your Nairobi hotel or the airport the evening.

If you wish we can arrange for one extra day in Samburu National Park to relax or an extra 3 days in Masai Mara to witness the Wildebeest Migration.
